After over 12 years of homeschooling my perspective has changed so much. In the beginning, I was doing traditional school at home. Education turned into focusing on what we were “supposed to do.” What rules to follow, what guidelines to follow…rather than the actual TRUE learning that should take place- the heart that wants to learn, the heart that wants to grow, and the heart that wants to gain more wisdom. I’ve learned education is NOT a checklist completed.

I want my kids to pursue knowledge for the sake of their true desire to learn, not because they need to fill in a bubble on a test. I want them to be excited about what they learn each day…not just because someone is telling them they need to fulfill the “requirements.” TRUE learning is fueled by our natural desire…same goes for the Bible. Not because we are “supposed to” do something, but because our thirst is so strong we can’t help but want more.

So for education and for church…let us not focus on the outside, but on the inside. Let God lead us and not the world. Let the heart lead us and not the guidelines.
